James Cook Heritage Trail – the Cook Landmarks

In this section the Landmarks which Cook named or described on the coasts of Victoria and New South Wales are listed in order from south to north.

  • The official coordinates (in decimal form) of the Landmark’s current position are given to aid navigation via a smartphone or satnav.
  • For each Landmark the date of Cook’s sighting and the description recorded in the Endeavour Journal are given, together with other information of interest.
  • Where the Landmark is incorrectly placed on today’s maps, the reason for this is given together with references or links to further information on those reasons.
  • A brief description of how to reach each Landmark is given, together with a description of what you will find there today.
  • Each Landmark has been graded 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest grade. Grading is subjective and based on factors such as historic importance, and how close the site is to what it, and the surrounding area, looked like when Cook named it.
  • Many of the Landmarks are in National Parks and an entry fee may apply. Details of fees, maps and other useful information may be found on the relevant National Park website.
